The
main focus of my work has been self and memory. Because I feel the need
to explore my own understanding towards memory and existence! I experiment
with the way I produce the images. I use photography and digital imaging
to produce images (both of which still play a large part in my production
process). When it comes down to it Im really most interested in
the way representation interprets my experience! So I began with childhood
My intentions with
my degree show work was to create stimulating images which had the feel
of the environmental circumstances, whilst growing up in New York City
during the nineteen-seventies . It was not, however, an attempt to tell
any particular story about New York, but rather how I saw the world
about me at a young age (i.e. it could have been anywhere in the world).
I also intended then to shew something of how I felt, and to some extent
still feel, about myself, but in such a way so as to interest, and stimulate
the imagination of, the viewer. Hopefully this effect will have been
achieved by talking not of myself in particular, but also about where
I come from, and the complexity of not being able to realize this (of
how one can never really be known). In this instance it
is the New York City of the nineteen-seventies, and in particular Greenwich
Village and the East Village (or Lower East Side as its also referred
to). The former being where I lived and the latter being where I spent
much of my time, as this was where allot of my parents friends
lived .
I layered together
images of myself, as a small boy, and of various parts of the city,
creating a view of how the New York of my memory is. The titles in this
series are all derived from the file names of the sketches
for these paintings, which were done in Photoshop on the Mac.
I shall continue
to work in the same media I have been using. As for subject matter
Well that could also be said to be a constant of sorts, because my prime
fascination/obsession is reality, and/or its perception
and/or memory. So that theme flows through my concepts for work. What
Im working on at present is a series of images of cockroaches,
which have resonances of past and present, and are metaphors for the
city. |
